Celebrating the bare bones of a building is at the core of industrial-chic design, and its urban appeal has increased in popularity over the years. However, while it's one thing to go all hipster hangout in a disused factory in east London, it's quite another to try to introduce industrial elements in a new build or period house – especially in what should be one of the comfiest spaces in your home.
If the thought of all that bare concrete and exposed pipework puts you off this rough and ready style, how about a softer version of the aesthetic? It's possible to apply your favourite industrial finishes in your living space alongside practical furniture (no breeze-block tables here) and comfortable seating. Here are 10 tips to get you started…
Soften bare brick
Bare brick is a staple feature in industrial schemes and is usually paired with equally unadorned windows and minimal soft furnishings. For a warmer take on the trend, combine with floor-sweeping curtains and a relaxed, cushion-filled sofa. Black and burgundy accents and a dark grey column radiator punctuate this otherwise neutral living room.
Try stripped-back style
Industrial design relies on exposing the fabric of a building – whether it's supporting steels, runs of cable or ventilation ducts. If this stripped-back style appeals, one way you can incorporate the look is to make a feature of a wood-burning stove. Its position in a prominent spot, with no attempt made to conceal the flue pipe, ensures this contemporary stove forms the centrepiece of the open-plan living space.

Consider creative storage
For industrial-style storage with added aesthetic appeal, find an alcove that would suit a set of floating shelves and paint the whole recess in a suitably moody hue. This black bookshelf acts as a divide between rooms; the dark colour makes a feature of anything displayed on it.
Big up oversized art
Make a statement with oversized artwork. This bold print dominates the spacious living room, providing an appropriate sense of scale. Smaller paintings are grouped together in table-top displays for emphasis.
Whiten your walls
If too much exposed brick leaves your space in the shade, prise open a tin of brilliant white and get painting.
Or are you yearning for the brick look, but hesitant to start hacking at your plaster? It's possible to buy very convincing faux brick panels, which you attach to the wall with screws before filling and painting any joints. There are lots of different styles available, including those that look like painted brick.
Cheat the look
Crittall windows and factory spaces may go hand in hand, but for many of us these features simply aren't an option in our homes. For the feel of this type of industrial window, without the soho loft, seek out a mirrored frame that gives a similar look, minus the major refurb project.

Elevate industrial lighting Industrial-style lighting often involves metal pendants, bare bulbs or angular lamps, but these elegant glass droplets give the trend a more refined finish. The long chains and clamp fastenings are unexpected but surprisingly chic, lending the whole lighting scheme art-installation impact.
Divide and conquer
Industrial buildings repurposed as homes often need subdividing into rooms, with separate spaces for sleeping, bathing etc. One clever design idea to transfer to your own house is the use of wall-hung sliding doors. Sometimes referred to as 'barn doors', they can be used, for example, to partition the space between a dining and living room, or to provide privacy for an en suite bathroom. Choose timber for a soft look, or steel for added industrial clout.
Frame your space
Black-framed metal windows give you a head start when it comes to creating an industrial-style living room. Use their clean lines and graphic appearance as the basis for the rest of your look, combining with polished concrete floors and blank walls. For a chic but comfortable industrial living space, add midcentury-style sofas with straight arms and low wooden sideboards for storage.
Soften with textiles
Industrial design often relies on a monochrome palette with minimal prints, but who's to say you can't incorporate a few flowers into your hint-of-utilitarian-style living room? Offset faded florals against reclaimed furniture and junkyard finds. This supersize sofa may look pretty, but rustic wooden accessories, such as the repurposed wheeled table and antique wooden shutters, give the scheme an industrial edge.
