Can I put vinyl flooring in living room?

Hi everyone,
Next month we are looking to replace the living room carpet as this one is full of annoying stains etc.

Laminate flooring is nice but expensive and we need to keep it v.cheap as everything else needs doing at the same time.

we've had vinyl put in the kitchen and it looks nice, it's easy to clean etc so when I suggested putting it in the living room my DP and mum looked absolutely horrified.

Is this not the done thing? Will it look tacky? Argh!

Thanks in advance smile

I knew someone who did this, and yes it did look tacky, and strange. Vinyl is for kitchens and bathrooms.
I wouldn't, sorry.

It does look very cheap and nasty, I found this out myself grin. It is also very very cold, not ideal in the winter. I would save for laminate if I were you tbh.

no, you really can't. It will look hideous. Get cheap carpet.

I wouldn't. B&Q have laminate for £5.99/sqm at the moment.

Which vinyl did you put down in the kitchen?

You could always get the wood effect vinyl. There are some really effective ones which will look like laminate until you get close up. You could then put a rug in the middle. The trouble with cheap laminate is that it doesn't last and will chip very quickly and unless you intend to fit it yourself, the fitting charges are expensive (my husband is a flooring fitter).

I disagree. I think if you choose carefully you can get vinyl that is very close to wood/laminate. If it is thick it won't be cold. Friends of mine got it done. Effective and practical. I think the secret is going for as realistic as you can.

I keep threatening this overtime ds spills something. Which is a lot

I'd do it. You can get some really nice ones. Some really expensive and hardwearing, too. And very quick to lay.

I've got lovely wood-effect vinyl, many people have commented on my ''lovely wood floor'' only to be told it's not. They were shock

It's so easy to clean, and you have to be careful with laminate and water, not with vinyl.

One thing I find with my vinyl floor is that heavy furniture dents it. It doesn't break but I'd bear this in mind when putting furniture on it. (Mine's not an expensive one, tjough: pricier ones should be more hard-wearing).

I think it is your living room put what ever you like in it and personally I like the idea.
Practical, easy to clean and could look amazing.
Also, it is worth knowing that not all vinyl is cheap or looks tacky. Some looks amazing and certainly rivals those "posh" floor coverings.

mouses Thu 20-Mar-14 17:25:21

Hi mouses just an update...(sorry to hijack your thread, OP!) but we went and talked to our local flooring tradesmen and they're coming out to measure next week to give us a quote on some Camaro vinyl flooring!

They have it down in the shop and it looks amazing, like real wood. I can't wait!
